I got that email, too, and was initially very excited that cPanel was trying to do something to reduce idle memory usage, then I started wondering what the trade-off is going to be.

Is it going to be more CPU-intensive, have fewer features, or did cPanel just come up with ways to make it more memory-efficient? I can't tell from the email or the sales info. There's probably more info on their site/forums, but I haven't had a chance to look yet. It looks like there is time, because so far, it's still only in the "Edge" builds.

The other thing I don't understand is how the upgrade will be done. Are there two pathways to upgrade; e.g., non-VPS optimized and VPS-optimized, or once it gets into the release stage will all upgrades be the VPS-optimized version?

I guess it left me with more questions than it answered.

Yea, no one really knows too much at the moment.

I would imagine, that it has less features then the current one that will allow it to be more stripped down, and they may have changed from perl to php for performance reasons (dought it...) but...

I would imagine, that it would use more CPU then RAM, like you correctly said.

In terms of Edge... we won't even look at it until its up to Release which means its months... still... much like their "Windows" offer... which has been 5 years in the making....

I got a chance to peek at the cPanel forums. This post makes it sound like it may be more a matter of improved efficiency and memory management with no loss in features. I hope so!

That thread has been hijacked by some people talking about how they don't like the "VPS Optimized" in the logo in WHM, but hopefully there will be more relevant posts as more people try it out.

LOL thats funny.

Yea, I hope there won't be any loss of features, apart from a few SUPER old ones that should have been gone AGES ago.

I know why they don't like the "VPS Optimized" logo is they can't sell their customers on "this is a dedicated server" when this is actually a VPS... as the logo will provide otherwise... - I've heard of companies doing this before.

I just did a cPanel update in response to the notice about the security upgrades, and low and behold, the new version (11.18.5-Release) is proudly labelled "VPS Optimized" in the banner of cPanel. I'm impressed they got this out so fast.

I checked my resource usage in Virtuozzo, though, and it is no better than before.

That's because the skin for cpanel accounts was updated but the core backend hasn't be released.

VPS Optimized is still in EDGE and risky to use.
