Default Very new to VPS, questions on 'reselling'

I'll make a long story short, I inherited an existing website. While I helped run the forums and the email list on this site, I knew nothing about the technical aspects of having a website.

I ended up having to change servers. It is a high traffic site that I had to get a VPS to handle.

I have had no problems since joining HIC in July 07. I also have not done anything to my site other than a few page changes.

I am terrified of the deep inner workings of the VPS.

Over the weekend a friend was having major problems with his server. I mentioned that I was able to 'host' on my VPS. The next thing I know I have watched the tutorial videos and set him up.

All seems to be working fine, but my question is "Now what?" Is there anything I should know? Anything I should do or not do? He knows I can't help with any tech support should he have some sort of problem with it. Should there be any problems? Is there anything he could do to mess the whole VPS up? I set it up like the video example of the Intermediate plan. Is there anything I could do to mess the whole thing up??

I've spend the last 2 days reading through the forums looking for potential problems. I do know that some of the answers I've seen are far more technical than I can comprehend.

My website management knowledge extends to connecting by ftp, editing a page in notepad, saving, and done.

P.S. I am absolutely not charging him or actually reselling anything. I could never charge for something I know so little about. This was done purely as a favor.

Barb,

Thank you for posting your question. These are both very good questions.

1. Inner workings of a VPS is complex if you start changing settings.... if you leave it configured like we set it up for you you shouldn't have any problems.

2. I mean as long as he isn't "reselling" it to customers you should be fine, as normally what happens is customers of customers abuse the VPS and then the customer is left to deal with the situation. I think that as long as its just your site and his you should be 100% ok.

3. If you do run into issues, you are always more then welcome to post your question on this forum and we will be glad to answer any questions you may have about your VPS or lend you a helping hand.

Thank you..

I do not plan on messing with a thing. I firmly believe in 'leave well enough alone'. It was scary enough setting up his account. *G*

Update

There seems to be a problem since moving his site under my VPS account.

At first he was getting the occasional 'network time out' error. It was very sporadic and while I might be able to go to his site, he could not or vise versa.

Now, the error message is

Forbidden
You don't have permission to access / on this server.

Again it's not every time, on every computer, but is becoming more and more frequent. In the last week there have been more errors than not.

My site has worked just fine the entire time.

Any ideas or suggestion?

Barb

Yes contact support about this issue. This isn't the place to deal with such matters.

Thank you. I did not realize I would have support on an account I set up in my VPS.

That's good news!
