Question Ruby On Rails (RoR)

Everyone loves RoR. However, there are some questions about RoR.

1. CPU / Memory intensive - is it?
2. Security of the famework?

What are you're thoughts and feelings about it?

Denis, I'd also be curious to see how it's being used on sites, both on HostICan and elsewhere. That would help in deciding the best ways to use it.

1. A Rails process does need an ongoing process to best serve traffic. Most standard way these days is with mongrel (a single-process servlet). One mongrel instance binds to a port, and then some other webserver proxies to it. Load balancing gets involved for sites with more traffic, making Apache 2.2 and nginx popular choices.

It's not CPU intensive unless you're doing CPU intensive things with it like XML parsing or something.

2. I am not certain that this is a well-formed enough question to have meaning.

I'll presume that I know what you're actually asking and state: the default security for Rails is far and away better than the default security settings for PHP-- and further, the presence of Rails as a framework and buffer between web input and the language actually used for any file system attack is a benefit not available everywhere in PHP. PHP is also often used and attacked at web hosts worldwide.

Bigfleet - I would firstly like to welcome you to the HostICan forum. Thanks for joining.

Thank you for letting us know more about RoR, its a fairly new subject here. We've been playing around with it for a while, just haven't deployed it officially as yet. But its getting closer day by day on shared hosting.

No problem, like to be a useful advocate. Shared hosting is dodgy even for the hosts that specialize in Rails hosting. VPS is the typical environment for users who want to . Feel free to e-mail me if you need more info.

I'm just wondering, if everyone switched to rails, would the attacks increase on RoR? Of course!

Saying that PHP is attacked worldwide is same thing as saying more hackers attack Windows than any other OS. Of course! The hackers go after what is used the most. Common fact.
