I'm trying to change the permalink setting on my wordpress site. I go to settings then to permalinks and it takes 5 to 10 minutes for the permalinks page to load and its not giving me any options for changing, all thats on the page is this
Customize Permalink Structure By default WordPress uses web URLs which have question marks and lots of numbers in them, however WordPress offers you the ability to create a custom URL structure for your permalinks and archives. This can improve the aesthetics, usability, and forward-compatibility of your links. A number of tags are available, and here are some examples to get you started. Anyway, I posted this in a wordpress forum and the response I got asked whether or not my server/host has the requirements for permalinks. I imagine you do but just want to double check. Thanks. |

Normally this is because the .htaccess is unwriteable. Go ahead and rename or delete the .htaccess in the public_html, then WP will create a new one when your saving the permlinks and that should solve this issue.
Let us know how it goes.

Yes, you could try upgrading to the latest WP. It will solve the problem if its a WP Issue.

Yes Shazam, when I delete the .htaccess file it creates a new one but I still have the same problem. The file is always empty. Could this be a Fantastico error?

Here's the standard WordPress .htaccess configuration info, which goes in the main folder in which WordPress is installed: # BEGIN WordPress RewriteEngine On RewriteBase / RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d RewriteRule . /index.php [L] # END WordPress Let me know if that works.

Still not working. I tried it in the main folder as well as others and I also tried changing the permissions but still no luck with it. Just don't know why all the other links on the page(General,Writing,Reading,Discussion,Privacy,Mi scellaneous) all work perfectly and load within seconds but the permalinks takes about 5 minutes to load and all I get is the paragraph in my 1st post.
