i have a pretty small forum, less than 20,000 posts, and i figured i might as well update my phpbb search index, since i haven't done it since i switched hosts.
so i start the job, and after one step i have the account notice cpu page. i understand you guys have to limit shared usage, but this is pretty crazy, ive been on many shared hosting providers and NEVER had a problem rebuilding search indexes. dont tell me to get vps or dedi, because i simply cant afford it, and for my tiny forum shared should be more than enough. meh, forget it, just venting i guess.... but now im stuck with a partial search index, and if i resume it ill just keep getting the notice and then ill get shut down for abuse... w00t. |

20,000 posts - that's enough high, that's what I can say. You may try to turn Off google/msn/yahoo bot's with robot.txt,
so it will lower usage but in same time you will lose seo positions. Not the best idea, however it could... |

How would that reduce the load caused by updating the search index?

20,00 posts is nothing, at least compared to other hosters.
but yah, the bot thing has nothing to do with search indexes.... (forum search, not search engine) |
