Help please-moving forum to Hostican -it didn't work

I moved my site and a small forum over to Hosican. I moved my files myself since two attempts failed by the transfer team. Got everything pointed to the new servers;however, my forum will not come up and I get a MySQLerror. The home page loads.
So I installed Phpbb again in a different directory as Fantastico was reporting no install found.
My question is: can I rename or replace the files in the new installation to restore the old posts and passwords and such? If so what do I need to do exactly? I hate to start over as we had nearly three hundred posts and pics and this was with a mere twelve members.
I would appreciate any help!

i personally haven't transferred any forum yet . but i would be considering too. so this information would also be helpful for me. thanks!
