Hi,
[insert standard speech about service at the host you had been with for four or five years deteriorating] Here's what I'm dealing with moving: 1) Two sites hosted on Moveable Type. 2) One site hosted on Expression Engine. None of these sites have any special needs - no forums or special features. I do not believe that my host has cPanel or the other option, but I don't know. They don't call it cPanel - how would I know if they call it their own proprietary name? (I would also discuss this in PM). If my host does not have cPanel, then what would the steps be for me? I'm just trying to figure out time and logistics. I also have some other questions I am not quite sure I want to post publicly, but also don't want to jet off to a random presales email address. unless that experience here would somehow be different than it is everywhere else ![]() Last edited by coyote : 01-11-2008 at 04:57 PM. |

Hey coyote, welcome to the forums first of all.
The sites you mentioned, HostICan will want to know what type of traffic you get on them. They can make suggestions accordingly. If your host does not have cPanel, it makes moving a little more difficult since you have to manually move things over. However, if your host has a backup function so that you can download your site in one zip file, you can use that to transfer. I have a good knowledge of other hosts and their backends. Shoot me a PM sometime or wait for a HostICan staffer to assist you. ![]()

Hi everyone,
Thanks for the warm welcome. My sites are very low traffic, nothing exciting or important, except to me. maybe 5-10k visits a month. I'm hosted on Dreamhost which has written their own cPanel. Does that allow me to use hostican to move me or am I stuck moving myself? like i mentioned earlier i have a moveable type site and an expression engine site. so there are two databases involved. dreamhost does not have one-click backup. I can automagically generate backup tarballs of each site but me moving things over would be tough for me. i'd probably leave the MT site and reinstall EE and then move the db. I do not pretend to be an expert. I need to know whether or not the DH cPanel qualifies before I make any plans or commit to moving over. If it was being done for me I could do it tomorrow. If I have to do it it'll be a while until I can budget the time. You know how it goes. thanks again ![]() |

Those tarballs can be downloaded and uploaded to your new host and extracted without issue. The Database should be accessible via backup download as well. Overall, it shouldn't be too difficult to move.
