Hello!
I currently have two domains hosted on one account with another hosting service. I've been with the other company for several years now, but the level of service has deteriorated to the point that I must consider finding a new home for my domains. I found this company after doing some searching and think I might have found a new home. Before I take the plunge I want to clear up a few things. I've done some searches on this forum, but I want to make sure what I'm reading is what I think it to be. 1) If I decide to switch hosts, do I get assistance only in having the domains point to the new servers, or is there a way to transfer my data as well? If not, I'm assuming I'd have to re-upload everything to the new server from scratch? 2) I run a forum that averages about 1,000 unique visits per day with about 1 GB or more of traffic. My biggest fear is transferring the database over to the new host and losing something along the way. I use phpbb and run the latest version of 2.0 software. I have not upgraded to the new 3.0 release. I also have only a couple of mods installed to help with spammers. Will I need to reinstall phpbb and the mods, or will it be transferred over from my previous host? 3) How do I transfer the database so I don't lose any of the posts, member info, etc? 4) Right now I have an htaccess file in the root folder pointing to specific subfolders for each domain that I own. Will this be the case after the move, or is there another way that this needs to be done so I can have each domain separated within the one acount? That's all I can think of at the moment. Any help on the 4 questions above would be a great help! Thanks! Mike |

Here's the link to our "SwitchNow" service, which has information about the service: HostICan - Web Hosting - FREE Domain, PHP, 2,500GB of bandwidth, and more... WIth a forum or any other database-driven content, such as a blog, before the transfer process begins, you need to close your site for new posts, so that nothing is lost during the transfer. It's always a good idea to put up an announcement that you are moving to new servers and that, when the move is complete, you'll open the site again for your visitors. One more thing: After your site is moved, you should always check all the settings to verify that everything is the way you want it. We do our best, but we can't read your mind, so you want to double-check your .htaccess file, and all the other configuration information to make sure everything is correct and working properly. I hope this gives you a bit of a direction.

Basically, as long as you are hosted on cPanel right now, it would be an easy process to get moved over. Are you on cPanel currently?

Thanks for the responses!
Okay, it looks like my current host does not use cPanel. Does that mean I would have to manually upload my content via FTP once the domain transfers have taken place? Hope this isn't a stupid question, but I'm trying to look ahead at what I may be dealing with. Can I just copy the phpbb files over to the new server as they are on my current server, or would I need to install them on the new server? It's probably easy to do, but I foresee a huge headache in my future. :-( Thanks! Mike Last edited by mgregg99 : 12-10-2007 at 01:12 PM. |

Thanks for the msg.
Yes, basically you have to: 1. Download everything from your old host 2. Upload all your content into the public_html folder of your new account. 3. MySQL - You can export via phpmyadmin at your old host, and then import with our phpmyadmin and you should be all set. Seems a long process but...you know how it goes

Does your other hosts' control panel have a backup function to compress all the files into one file for backup? If they did you could upload that file to your new HIC home and use the cPanel file manager to extract it.
When moving a forum, be sure to lock the database during the transfer process (stay up overnight). When you lock the database before moving, you'll ensure no lost posts.
