Smile Connecting to my Database??? going to cry very soon!

Hi everyone and greetings from sweden!.

I am in a big dark hole of php mysql and database nightmares!.

So I am hoping for some help and advice before a go sit in the corner and never come out again ok well its maybe not so bad but I have been trying for 2 days now to connect to my database with no luck.

I have gone into the cpanel and created a new database and user with all access etc. and also a table with 4 fields.

but when I try to connect with:

localhost
then my username
then my password

but I leave port no to nothing.

Am i missing something important as in some code I must write etc?

I am working on a mac, do I have to install mysql on my computer also?
is there any training sites I can try out as I am compleatly new to the database world?

Any help advice greatly appreciated!

thanks in advance

Default so what now?

So just got a message from suport at hostican as follows:

Thank you for contacting HostICan support.

It seems like you trying to establish remote MySQL connection.
Sorry to say, but we dont allow it on shared hosting packages.
Sincerely,

GRR - Welcome to the HostICan Forum!

Please go ahead and provide me with the following, that you are using:

database name:
database username:
host: localhost

So I can review what you're doing wrong. I think you should be able to set it up locally. However, Randy is right, we do no support remote mysql

You're trying to establish a connection outbound or inbound?

It would be outbound, basicaly I will create a form in dreamweaver then I have a programme that will fix all the back end code for me: see below

Form Processing - Forms To Go - PHP, ASP or Perl

Si I need the details to connect to my database as per instructions below,

All parameters to access the database are listed in the connection panel.

These parameters are provided by the database administrator and are mandatory; otherwise, the script could not be created.

The Hostname must be the IP address or the domain name of the MySQL server. In many cases, when the database server is in the same web server, localhost is used as server name.

The User, Password and Database parameters are mandatory.

The only non mandatory parameter is the port number. If the database administrator did not provide this value, it must be in blank.
Note: connection parameters are case-sensitive. They must be written just as they were created or assigned by the database administrator.

I may be going the wrong way about this but it my first go a databases so apologies fro lost boy in the woods scenario.
