Default Mass Email Problem With phpBB

Does anyone else now get an error message when trying to send a mass email with phpBB on their phpBB forums hosted with hostican?

I noticed today that it has suddenly stopped working for me today, even though it has always worked previously while using this host. Here is the error message I get:

Quote:
General Error
Failed sending email :: PHP ::

DEBUG MODE

Line : 234
File : emailer.php
I haven't made any changes that would have caused this--at least none that I can think of. Also, all the other email functions work on the forum, such as the notify of replies and the registration process emails. They all work and do not have error messages. It's just the mass email, which doesn't work and gives that error message above.

What do you think?

Just how many mailings are you trying to send out? We have a limit on shared of 100. That's to keep the servers chugging along, and not getting inundated with massive amounts of mailings to do.

Yep, that sounds like you are sending more than what HIC allows on a shared server. If you need mass mailings, you will need to consider a VPS.

That will make it hard to use Hostican for phpBB boards, unless they have less than 100 registered users.

I have over a thousand users and I really want to be able to send out newsletters. Also, I assume their will be times when more than 100 emails need to be sent out in an hour anyway with topic reply notifications, activation emails, and welcome emails.

Does anyone know of a free SMTP server that would let me send a newsletter email?

This feature is to protect us everyone from their scripts being exploited. However, if you can find a remote SMTP server that would send this, that would be a good way of solving it.

Do you have any SMTP services you know of that would allow that much email?

I haven't found any yet.

I imagine most free SMTP servers are meant for personal use not business use. They probably will have strict limits in place, and I assume they probably won't let me send out the newsletters.

Another possibility is your own ISP. But I'd call their support people first, or check their Terms of Service to see at what level their spam filtering might get in the way.

You might also consider upgrading your plans here.

I'm dealing with the same problem and found some possible solutions. If you look at this link:
Hostican Emails

It says something like:

"use the crons job to scedule the php to run each hour. And so, 100 emails are sending out per hour. If you need to send out 3000-4000 emails, it will take less than 2 days time to complete. Simple as that. And you won’t need an expensive dedicated server to do the job."

Its not simple for me, but I'm willing to give it a try. I'm going to post on this forum to see if anyone has done this before, but I haven't had much luck with Hostican support.

I'm getting this problem as well, only I have no more than 55 members. I get the same error, and when I tried going to an SMTP I got an SMTP error. I called HostICan and they told me to come here thinking maybe someone has figured out why this is happening. it worked a couple of weeks ago,. now it's not. Has anyone has any luck with this yet? I can send out 2 mails to my staff, but when i go to all users (55 max) I get the error.
