I installed WP using HostICan's Fantastico tool... now need to update WordPress from 2.0.4 to 2.3.3. I'm concerned about breaking my blog. Have backed up the data base, and entire blog -- all WP files. Has anyone done an update from this old a WP version? I'd appreciate any suggestions to avoid breaking my blog. Thanks!

Nickc - Welcome to the HostICan Community!
I would suggest doing an upgrade to: 2.0 to 2.1 2.1 to 2.2 2.2 to 2.3 The reason why I suggest this is because the WP will change as you upgrade versions and you dont know how many plugins it may break, and how many issues you may get if you have a custom theme. So slowly but surely is always the best policy to do an upgrade this far apart in versions.

Denis,
Thanks for the suggestion -- makes good sense! Is it possible to use Fantastico for an auto-install on HostIcan, or would I have to manually install each update on my HostIcan site? I can make my way around web design, but I'm a novice when it comes to messing around with the server from where I am... One of the reasons I picked HostIcan is because it offers WordPress. (Though I've found lots of other reasons to stay -- great hosting services!) Thanks again! You're very kind to take the time. Nick |

Success... thanks again, Denis. Wasn't so hard to do the series of updates myself, using the good instructions at Upgrading WordPress Extended WordPress Codex
My FTP client required me to empty all WordPress folders on the server before deleting the folders themselves... arrrghh! Wish WP were built on fewer folders or that I could delete non-empty folders! But your suggsestion to upgrade one major version at a time was excellent. For what it's worth, I did not encounter any problems with the install at each level. 2.3.3 seems to be humming along just fine... Many thanks! Nick |
