VB is an excellent product, particularly for highly-trafficked boards, where you need something for a business. But it can also be a little heavy on resources in a shared system.

phpBB is very popular, since it's a standard installation with Fantastico. However, one of the unsung heros of free forum software is MyBB, which has some similarities to VB, but is a much lighter weight on a server. It runs awfully fast and has a growing support network of volunteers.

What about SMF Simple Machines Forum? That one is becomming popular too. I personally don't like the way threads are displayed, but many do.

But with PHPBB 3 coming (it's still coming, right? LOL), there's a new one to consider. I dislike PHPBB due to the hacking issues. I also dislike running forums, period. Huge time waister for me.

I started with SMF and I didn't like it.

I also played with a phpBB final candidate and I wasn't altogether impressed with it.

There are lots of options and, of course, lots of viewpoints.

My fave now is MyBB.

Well, I'll have to look at MyBB. People ask me all of the time for suggestions of forum software. That's just one more board system I can confuse them with. Heh

Try The Paracast Discussion Forums and see if you like it (try one of their Quick Theme choices too).

Does it install out of the box with.SEO friendly html forum threads like this forum displays? Or is that an addon? If it comes with SEO friendly structure like this, it's already a huge +1

It's a FREE add-on, unlike the SEO mod you have to buy for vBulletin. There's also another mod that creates the sitemap. But version 1.4 of MyBB will have many of these capabilities built in.

Including the html threading? That's nice. I hate adding on to forums like crazy though. I don't like how forum software decides they all need session IDs in URLs. Worst stuff for search engines to crawl.
