On the official WordPress site has released a new version 2.8.5 of their blogging software. Now I'm with WordPress 2.8.4 on my hosting and until now I did not update WordPress yet. I read, that I should stop all plugins before update, could you tell me is it true?

There is no problem with the update. Of course disabling of the plugins is a good practice. Then simply select all plugins and start them at once. But remember the basic rule - always do a backup before you do anything in your hosting.
