My FTP client required me to empty all WordPress folders on the server before deleting the folders themselves... arrrghh! Wish WP were built on fewer folders or that I could delete non-empty folders!
But your suggsestion to upgrade one major version at a time was excellent. For what it's worth, I did not encounter any problems with the install at each level. 2.3.3 seems to be humming along just fine... Many thanks!
